While Macadamias may be higher in fat, they contain omega 9 and plant sterols and have been shown to be cardio-protective. In a recent study conducted at the University of Newcastle in Australia and reported in the journal, Lipids, 2007, 17 male participants with elevated cholesterol included in their diet 40-90 grams a day of macadamias. The results: significantly lower blood markers for inflammation and oxidation. According to cardiologist Dr. Ross Walker, “The palmitoleic acid in macadamias works to stabilize, the rhythm in the heart."
